EAST AUSTIN — Reunion Pizza has opened inside Hi Sign Brewing at 730 Shady Lane in East Austin, serving pies that combine traditional Italian pizza with Indian flavors. The menu is the result of a partnership between Mitch King and his cousin, who developed it over a year and a half of kitchen experiments and trial and error with help from family.

One of the shop's big sellers is the Paneer Gone Wild pizza, which mixes paneer, a soft Indian cheese, with a chili sauce. King traced the recipe to a family dish.

"My aunt makes a really good chili paneer. We just decided to throw it on the pizza one day and try it out," he said.

Another popular menu item is the Butter Believe It pizza. King said the recipe came through family connections in India.

"That's like, one of the most popular Indian pizzas that people do. My aunt-in-law is from Punjab in India, so she's given me a bunch of recipes. She said, 'OK, you can use it, but not share it, obviously,'" he said.

Reunion Pizza also offers classic pizzas alongside its Indian-inspired pies. King does not consider himself a professional chef but a home cook. King met his cousin at a family wedding, an encounter he said led to the restaurant concept. The Indian-Italian pizza style, he has noted, is popular in Canada and California.

The restaurant is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from noon to 10:30 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
