LOS ANGELES — Jake Reiner published a Substack post on Dec. 14, 2025, reflecting on the day he learned his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, had been found dead in their Brentwood home. In the post, the 34-year-old recounted receiving two phone calls from his sister, Romy Reiner, while attending a celebration of life for his friend Christian Anderson, who had died in October 2025.

Romy first called to tell him their father was dead, and minutes later called again to say their mother was dead, according to the post. "My world, as I knew it, had collapsed. I was in a trance," Reiner wrote, adding that he focused only on getting to his childhood home, getting to his sister, and figuring out what had happened.

Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, who were married in 1989, were found in the primary bedroom of their Brentwood home, officials have said. Nick Reiner, the couple's middle child and youngest son, was arrested on Dec. 15, 2025, about 15 miles from the home, officials have said. He has been charged with two counts of murder with the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders and a special allegation that he used a knife, and has pleaded not guilty. He is being held at Los Angeles's Twin Towers Correctional Facility without bail while awaiting trial.

"Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time," he wrote. "It's too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it's not a dream."

He also wrote: "Sure, any loss of a parent is devastating, but nothing compares to losing both of them at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother be at the center of it. It's almost too impossible to process." He added: "We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable."

Reiner wrote that his sister would share her own experiences and reflections about their family in her own time. He and Romy previously released a joint statement about the loss of their parents. "Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience," the statement read. "They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends," they wrote.
