SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs finished the 2024–25 NBA season with a 62–20 record and secured the second seed in the Western Conference. The 62 wins nearly doubled the franchise's total from the previous season and nearly tripled its total from two seasons earlier.

The Spurs opened the season with a 5–0 start and defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in their first meeting of the campaign. Ten days later, San Antonio won again against the Thunder, and two days after that, on Christmas Day, the Spurs defeated Oklahoma City a third time. San Antonio finished the season 4–1 against the Thunder.

The turnaround followed a difficult finish to the prior season, when the Spurs lost 19 of their final 30 games after Victor Wembanyama missed the remainder of that campaign. Wembanyama also sat out 12 games in November and early December of the 2024–25 season with a strained calf. During stretches when Wembanyama was injured or on the bench, backup center Luke Kornet, who came from the Boston Celtics, played for San Antonio.

The season marked a coaching transition. Gregg Popovich retired as head coach, and Mitch Johnson, in his thirties, replaced him on the bench.

The roster featured several young players added through recent drafts. Stephon Castle was selected near the top of his draft, and Carter Bryant was selected in the previous year's NBA draft. Dylan Harper was selected near the top of the following draft. The Spurs also acquired All-Star guard De'Aaron Fox in a trade last season.

In the final regular-season game against the Denver Nuggets, Bryant dunked on Nikola Jokić. The Nuggets and the Thunder are recent NBA champions.

The Spurs had previously made the NBA playoffs 22 consecutive seasons from the late 1990s to the late 2010s. That streak ended before the franchise's recent rebuilding period, which preceded the 62-win turnaround in 2024–25.
