FORT WORTH, TEXAS — The Oklahoma Sooners gymnastics team captured its eighth NCAA women's gymnastics national title on Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas, posting a total score of 198.1625. The winning mark finished 0.0875 points ahead of LSU and nearly half a point above Florida, with Minnesota placing fourth.

Oklahoma entered the championship final with the highest team score but trailed LSU heading into the day's final rotation. LSU sophomore Kailin Chio scored 9.90 on the balance beam in the final rotation, while Lexi Zeiss and Keira Wells each fell on the balance beam for Oklahoma during the meet.

Faith Torrez scored 9.95 on the floor exercise, and the balance beam rotation concluded with routines by freshman Ella Murphy, Lily Pederson and Torrez. Oklahoma did not need to count a floor score below 9.90.

Torrez also won the individual national all-around title. She had not competed in the all-around during the season before competing in all four events for the first time in the Thursday semifinal.

"It's a dream come true," Torrez said about her final two meets as a college gymnast. "We just reminded ourselves to go for it, leave it all on the floor. We did a good job at staying in our bubble, so we were really laser focused on us."

Sophomore Addison Fatta, who injured her hand, was restricted to competing only on the balance beam, where she scored 9.735. The team reconfigured its lineup before the championship following the injury.

"I was in disbelief today. We were just on the edge of our seats. I honestly could not believe it," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "As we were meeting after our last floor routine, I did not know. We did not know what position we would end up in, but what I told them was, 'You did everything you could.'"

"At the end of the day, if we do our best gymnastics, that's all we can ask for. We can't control the score," gymnast Lily Pederson said.

After the final scores were announced, the crowd chanted "Boomer Sooner," confetti was tossed and "We Are the Champions" played over the loudspeaker. Balloons featuring the number 8 were displayed in the stands and on the floor.

With the victory, the Sooners moved into sole possession of third place in all-time NCAA women's gymnastics national titles standings, passing UCLA. Georgia has won 10 national titles and Utah has won nine. Oklahoma's eight championships tie the school record for most titles among its women's programs, matching the softball team. Minnesota reached the championship meet for the first time after defeating Utah in the regional finals and UCLA in the semifinals.
