PHOENIX — Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said he will take a week or two to contemplate his future before meeting with controlling owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy to decide whether to return as head coach. Kerr made the comments after the Warriors' 111-96 play-in loss to the Phoenix Suns in Phoenix.

The defeat eliminated the Warriors, who finished the season 37-45 and entered the play-in tournament as the 10th seed. The game determined the 8th seed in the playoffs.

Kerr, who just completed his 12th season as Golden State's head coach, did not seek a contract extension before the season and postponed discussions about his future until after the team's elimination. His current deal is expiring. During his tenure, the Warriors won NBA championships in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022.

Speaking after the loss, he said his time with the franchise could be coming to an end. "I still love coaching, but I get it. These jobs all have an expiration date. There is a run that happens and when the run ends, sometimes it's time for new blood and new ideas," he said.

He also addressed Stephen Curry's role in his thinking. "That's part of the equation. I don't want to walk away from Steph. I'm definitely not going and coaching somewhere else next year in the NBA," Kerr said.

Kerr intentionally avoided conversations with Curry about his future during the season and plans to have those discussions soon. Curry said he prefers that Kerr remain as coach but understands that several factors will influence the decision. "I want Coach to be happy. I want him to be excited for the job. I want him to believe he's the right guy for the job," he said.
