Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez was shown a red card for violent conduct after pulling the hair of Leeds United forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin during a Premier League match that Leeds won 2-1. The dismissal followed a Video Assistant Referee review, with VAR official John Brooks flagging the incident for on-field referee Paul Tierney to examine.

Tierney reviewed the video footage on a pitchside screen before producing the red card against Martinez. The decision reduced Manchester United to 10 players as Leeds secured the victory at the final whistle. Manchester United manager Michael Carrick commented on the incident following the match.

The red card was consistent with a directive issued this season by the Premier League and the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, which requires referees to apply a zero-tolerance approach to hair pulling in matches. The guidance instructs officials to apply a strict threshold whenever hair pulling occurs, classifying the act as a non-football action that is unacceptable within a typical challenge. Under the directive, any confirmed instance of hair pulling must be sanctioned as violent conduct, carrying an automatic red card and the accompanying suspension.

Martinez is not the first player to be punished under the stricter enforcement this season. Everton defender Michael Keane received a similar sanction for pulling the hair of Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Tolu Arokodare in a match in January.

The enforcement of hair-pulling rules has differed across competitions, however. In the UEFA Women's Champions League, Arsenal's Katie McCabe pulled the hair of Chelsea player Alyssa Thompson but was not punished. Neither the on-field referee team nor the VAR in that match identified the incident as a red-card offense. The Premier League's directive applies to its own competition and does not govern UEFA matches, which operate under separate officiating structures and protocols.
