CHARLOTTE, N.C. — LaMelo Ball made a leaning, right-handed layup with 4.7 seconds left in overtime to give the Charlotte Hornets a 127-126 victory over the Miami Heat in an NBA play-in game in Charlotte, N.C. The win eliminated the Heat from the playoffs for the first time since the 2018-19 season.

Ball finished with 30 points and 10 assists, becoming the fourth player to record at least 30 points and 10 assists in an NBA play-in game, joining Josh Giddey, Kyrie Irving and Damian Lillard. Miles Bridges added 28 points and nine rebounds and blocked Davion Mitchell's attempt at a winning layup at the buzzer to seal the outcome.

The Hornets won their first postseason home game in a decade and are seeking their first playoff appearance in the same span. Charlotte will face the loser of Wednesday's matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Orlando Magic on Friday night for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Coby White, acquired by the Hornets in a midseason trade with the Chicago Bulls, scored 19 points. He made a banked three-pointer and another from the top of the key as part of a 10-0 Charlotte run late in the third quarter, then drained a three-pointer in the closing seconds of that period to give the Hornets an 89-83 lead.

The Heat built a 102-95 lead in the fourth quarter behind two three-point shots by Andrew Wiggins, who had 27 points. White then caught an inbounds pass and hit a turnaround three-point shot with 10.8 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Tyler Herro's potential game-winning three-point attempt in regulation hit the back of the rim.

In overtime, Ball's driving layup put the Hornets up by five points with 26 seconds remaining. But Ball committed a backcourt turnover and then fouled Herro on a three-point shot. Herro, who scored 23 points, made all three free throws to give the Heat a 126-125 lead with 8.7 seconds left. After a timeout, Ball drove to the right side of the lane and converted the go-ahead layup. The Heat had no timeouts remaining, and Mitchell's layup attempt was blocked by Bridges at the buzzer.

Ball flexed at midcourt as players mobbed each other during the celebration. "It worked," he said. Mitchell had 28 points for the Heat, and Bam Adebayo suffered a lower back injury when Ball tripped him in the second quarter.

"We just didn't win the game, and that can happen as well." Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "That's what we'll have to live with in the offseason."

"The support all game from the crowd, the noise, the everything, the drama I think I heard a little bit -- we were glad that we were able to pull this one out for the Charlotte fans, because they have definitely helped us throughout the whole year. And that's the environment that we want to keep having night after night," Hornets coach Charles Lee said.
