MIAMI — Javier Mascherano stepped down as head coach of Inter Miami CF for personal reasons, the club announced. Guillermo Hoyos will serve as Inter Miami's interim head coach, and chief soccer officer Alberto Marrero will assume Hoyos's previous responsibilities as sporting director.

Mascherano's coaching staff will also depart the club, according to the announcement.

"First and foremost, I would like to thank the club for the trust they placed in me, every employee who is part of the organization for the collective effort, but especially the players, who made it possible for us to experience unforgettable moments," Mascherano said in a club statement. "I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the club all the best moving forward."

Club owner Jorge Mas also issued a statement. "Javier will forever be part of this Club's history and will always hold a special place in the Inter Miami CF family," Mas said. "We respect his decision and are deeply grateful for everything he contributed, wishing him nothing but the very best in his professional and personal future."

Mascherano replaced Gerardo "Tata" Martino as head coach in November 2024. Before joining Inter Miami, he had only coached at youth national team level with Argentina. During his tenure, the club won the 2025 MLS Cup, defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps in the final, reached the semifinal of the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup, and reached the final of the 2025 Leagues Cup.

In the 2026 season, Inter Miami opened its new stadium near Miami International Airport in April. Mascherano coached the club's first two matches at the venue, both of which ended in draws. The club won three of its first five league games and sits third in the Eastern Conference after seven games. Inter Miami was eliminated from the Concacaf Champions Cup by Nashville SC in the Round of 16 last month.

Hoyos has worked as a coach and sporting director in leagues including Liga MX and served as head coach of the Bolivia national team.
