DAVIS CAMP, MOHAVE COUNTY, ARIZONA — A 26-year-old California man drowned Monday morning after jumping from a rented pontoon boat into the Colorado River near Davis Camp to retrieve a hat that had blown into the water. The man was identified as Kristopher Nathaniel Logan, according to a police statement.

Emergency crews responded to the area at approximately 11:15 a.m. local time after receiving reports of a possible drowning near Davis Camp, a recreation area in Mohave County near the Arizona-Nevada border. According to Bullhead City police, Logan had been aboard the rented pontoon boat with a group of friends who had made plans to spend the day fishing on the river.

At some point during the outing, Logan's hat blew off and landed in the river. He then jumped from the boat into the water to retrieve it, according to a police statement. After entering the water, Logan began struggling to swim and did not resurface.

Logan was not wearing a life jacket at the time he entered the river. Members of his group alerted emergency responders, who arrived at the scene near Davis Camp.

Fire department personnel conducted a search of the river and recovered Logan's body from the bottom. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident took place along a stretch of the Colorado River that passes through Arizona. The river is the seventh longest in the United States and flows through several states, including Arizona, before entering desert terrain in Mexico.

Park administrator Bo Hellams urged members of the public to wear recommended personal protective equipment regardless of assumed swimming ability.
