The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held across three countries — Canada, Mexico and the United States — marking the first time the tournament has been jointly hosted by three nations.

The two most recent World Cups were each staged by a single host. The 2018 tournament was held in Russia, and the 2022 edition took place in Qatar. The 2026 event will move the tournament to a geographically distributed model spanning much of the North American continent.

FIFA, the governing body of world soccer, oversees 211 member associations around the globe. FIFA has contended that it has a fiduciary duty to those member associations to extract the maximum revenue from the World Cup.

The joint hosting arrangement will require coordination among the three countries on logistics, security and transportation for teams, officials and fans traveling between match sites. Previous World Cups held in a single country centralized those operations under one national organizing committee, while the 2026 format divides responsibilities among three separate host nations.
