SELHURST PARK — Crystal Palace beat Newcastle United 2-1 at Selhurst Park on Sunday after Jean-Philippe Mateta scored two late goals to overturn a deficit. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe acknowledged the anger among the club's supporters following the result.

"I understand there's anger and frustration. I'm not blind to anything," Howe said. "I always have to look at myself first. I always say that. I'm number one accountable," he added.

Howe made six changes to his starting lineup for the match, dropping Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier. Malick Thiaw was the only one of Howe's five outfield signings to start, while William Osula started ahead of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa. Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner benched Adam Wharton, Ismaila Sarr and Mateta, though Mateta came on to score the two goals that decided the match.

Newcastle have dropped more points from winning positions than any other team in the Premier League this season. Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale described the pattern after the loss. "It's probably the story of our season. Getting into winning positions and not being able to hold on. I can't really put my finger on it," Ramsdale said.

The match followed a three-week break between games for Newcastle, during which a number of the club's players were on international duty. Crystal Palace had played a European match on Thursday before facing Newcastle on Sunday. Former England goalkeeper and television pundit Ben Foster said the layoff may have played a role. "It's hard to get into a rhythm of things when you haven't played for such a long time. It depends where you are in the league but I think for some teams it suits them better to have a game every three or four days rather than three weeks off," Foster said.

Aaron Ramsdale, Sven Botman, Joelinton and stand-in captain Jacob Murphy were the only Newcastle starters over the age of 25. Newcastle next host Bournemouth at St James' Park before a stretch of away matches against Arsenal, Brighton, Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Fulham.
