LONDON — Sale Sharks defeated Harlequins 26-17 in the Investec Champions Cup round of 16 to progress to the quarter-finals. The match, played in blustery conditions in London, saw Sale fly-half George Ford kick three first-half penalties and hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie score two tries as the visitors built a lead Harlequins could not overturn.

Ford's three penalties in the first half gave Sale an early cushion. Harlequins flanker Will Evans received a yellow card in the 32nd minute, and Cowan-Dickie crossed the try line in the 33rd minute. Ford converted the try to extend the visitors' lead heading into the interval.

Ford added a fourth penalty early in the second half, stretching Sale's advantage to 19 points. Harlequins responded through Chandler Cunningham-South, who scored a try in the 48th minute, but the home side's indiscipline continued when Jack Kenningham received a yellow card in the 53rd minute.

Cowan-Dickie scored his second try of the match. Harlequins captain Alex Dombrandt scored two tries to keep the hosts in contention, but the nine-point deficit at full time proved too large to close. Both sides had earlier missed scoring opportunities — Sale back row Jacques Vermeulen dropped the ball over the try line, while Harlequins were held up over the line on a separate occasion.

Sale will face the winner of the Leinster versus Edinburgh fixture in the Champions Cup quarter-finals next weekend. Sale sit seventh in the English Premiership, 23 points behind fourth place with six games remaining. Their most recent Premiership win before this match had come against Harlequins on Boxing Day. Harlequins are second from bottom of the Premiership table.

French referee Luc Ramos officiated the match, with Thomas Charabas and Jonathan Gasnier serving as assistant referees and Eric Gauzins as the television match official. All four officials are from France.
