AUGUSTA, GEORGIA — Phil Mickelson announced he will not compete in the 2026 Masters tournament, scheduled for April 9 to April 12 at Augusta National Golf Club, citing an ongoing family health matter. The three-time Masters champion disclosed his withdrawal in a social media post, stating he would be stepping away from competitive golf for an extended period of time.

"Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter. I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club and it is definitely the most special week of the year. I wish everyone the best of luck and will be watching," Mickelson wrote in the post.

Mickelson, 55, did not provide specific details about the nature of the family health matter. His withdrawal from the 2026 Masters marks the fourth time he has missed the tournament since making his debut at Augusta National in 1991. He had previously missed the tournament on three occasions since that debut.

Mickelson's absence also means that both he and Tiger Woods will not participate in the Masters for the first time since 1994.

Mickelson's 2026 competitive season had already been disrupted before the withdrawal announcement. He missed the first four events of the 2026 LIV Golf season at Riyadh, Adelaide, Hong Kong and Singapore. He returned to action at LIV Golf South Africa in Steyn City, where he tied for 48th place. His social media statement indicated that he would continue to be away from competitive golf for a period extending beyond the Masters.

At the 2025 Masters, Mickelson missed the cut at Augusta National. He first appeared at the tournament in 1991 and had been a near-constant participant in the years since.

Mickelson is a six-time major tournament winner. He won the Masters in 2004, 2006 and 2010, won the PGA Championship in 2005 and 2021, and won the Open Championship at Muirfield in 2013.
