BEIJING — Young people across China have adopted images of Kris Jenner as digital talismans on social media, using her likeness as profile pictures and phone wallpapers in a viral trend aimed at manifesting wealth and career success. The trend has spread across platforms including Weibo, Xiaohongshu, and Douyin, with a hashtag translating to #KrisJennerManifestation amassing nearly 2.7 million views on Xiaohongshu alone.
The broader hashtag #krisjenner has accumulated about 52.9 million views and more than 99,000 posts on Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote. Users are changing their profile pictures to Jenner's image to manifest riches, job offers, and nine-figure fortunes. Many posts pair stylized images of Jenner with cash and diamonds, while photos are often layered with images of dollar bills or captioned in English with phrases such as "Let's manifest" or "Keep rich, stay slay."
Some users have digitally transformed Jenner's image to reflect varying career goals, placing her likeness in the guise of a CEO in a suit, a doctor in a white coat, or a Ph.D. student in a graduation gown. Social media users in China have also nicknamed her the "Empress Dowager."
"Using her photo as my profile picture gives off this 'I'm a force to be reckoned with' vibe," said Chichi Xu, a university student. "The look in her eyes is sharp — it feels like a powerful woman who's sizing you up. I want that image to make people take me seriously."
George Zhao, a student, described the trend as a form of self-motivation. "For me, manifestation is really about believing in the power of belief itself. People joke about wanting Jenner's nine-figure assets, but I think it's also a kind of positive self-guidance," Zhao said.
Chinese influencer Marcelo Wang called Jenner "one of the hardest-working businesswomen in the U.S., and Chinese people really respect hard work."
The trend contrasts with the "lying flat" approach among some young people in China who do only the minimum necessary to get by. Young people in the country face a competitive job market as economic growth slows.
Jenner, the self-described "momager" of the Kardashian-Jenner family, is believed to have a net worth of hundreds of millions of dollars. She is the mother of Kourtney Kardashian Barker, Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, Rob Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, and Kylie Jenner. She oversees the careers of her children, managing deals across television, fashion, and business ventures, and said in a 2022 interview with Forbes that she takes a 10 percent commission from her children's earnings across their various projects.
Jenner first propelled her family into the spotlight with the launch of Keeping Up With the Kardashians in 2007; the series ran for 20 seasons and ended in 2021. The family returned to screens in 2022 with The Kardashians, now in its sixth season. Jenner is not known to have ever visited China.
