LONDON — Oxford won the 80th women's Boat Race on the River Thames, defeating Cambridge by 9.4 seconds to secure their first victory in the event since 2016. The race was held over a 4.3-mile course from Putney to Chiswick in blustery conditions.

Oxford took an early lead and pulled steadily away from Cambridge as the two boats navigated the Thames. The result brought Oxford's overall record in the women's Boat Race to 31 victories across the event's 80 editions.

Olympic bronze medallist Heidi Long spoke after the race. "I'm overwhelmed and so happy and proud," Long said. "It was absolutely incredible and amazing."

The victory came after years of defeat for several members of the Oxford crew. Annie Anezakis had been part of three losing boats before this year's contest. Sarah Marshall had also been part of three losing crews. Kyra Delray and Esther Briz Zamorano were also among the members of the Oxford crew. Oxford had not won the women's race since 2016.
