Why It Matters
The CDC states that E. coli symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting, fever, and nausea. E. coli symptoms typically start three to four days after exposure, but can appear up to nine days later.
Some E. coli infections may lead to serious kidney problems requiring hospitalization. Young children, older adults, and individuals with weak immune systems are at higher risk for serious complications from E. coli. Most healthy people recover from E. coli without treatment after five to seven days.
