ANDØYA SPACEPORT — Isar Aerospace successfully launched its Spectrum rocket into low-Earth orbit on Saturday. The launch occurred at 20:12 UTC (10:12 pm local time) from Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway.
Spectrum is a two-stage rocket that is 28 meters (92 feet) tall and 2 meters in diameter. The Spectrum rocket is powered by ten engines and targets payloads of up to 1,000 kg to low Earth orbit.
The rocket reached an altitude of 100 km (62 miles) in less than four minutes. The payload included five small satellites and one in-flight technological experiment, as well as six commercial and educational CubeSats and an experiment to prove new technologies in orbit.
Spacecraft separation was completed successfully after satellite deployment. Saturday's launch served as both the vehicle's qualification mission and its first flight carrying payload.
The mission was named 'Onward and Upward' and was supported by the European Space Agency’s Boost! Program. Isar Aerospace won the first Microlauncher Competition awarded by the German Space Agency at DLR, which resulted in the selection of the payloads for this flight.
The European Launcher Challenge requires providers to achieve an orbital launch no later than 2027. The company aims to build capacity to manufacture up to 40 launch vehicles per year.
