U.S. — Amazon unveiled a new lineup of premium Alexa Tablets on October 8, 2026. The company is discontinuing the Fire tablet brand and will stop shipping Fire tablets within one to two months.

The Alexa Tablet lineup includes three models: the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, Alexa Tablet 11, and Alexa Tablet 8. The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro starts at $499.99 for the 128-gigabyte version with a standard display. The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro with a Nanomatte display starts at $549.99. The Alexa Tablet 11 starts at $329.99.

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro features a 12-inch display with a resolution of 2800x1840, a 3:2 aspect ratio, and a 120Hz refresh rate. It is 6.5 millimeters thick and weighs 550 grams. The device is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8400 processor and has a peak brightness of 500 nits.

The Nanomatte display on the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro was developed in partnership with Corning. The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro supports Wi-Fi 6E and Dolby Atmos speakers, and offers up to 16 hours of video playback. It comes in Graphite.

The Alexa Tablet 11 has an 11-inch display with a 2.5K resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio. It offers up to 15 hours of video playback and comes in Graphite, Amethyst, and Matcha. The Alexa Tablet 8 has an 8.7-inch display and weighs 329 grams.

It offers up to 14 hours of video playback and comes in Graphite, Rosette, and Teal. The Alexa Tablet 11 and Alexa Tablet 8 are powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8189 processor. All new Alexa Tablets feature an aluminum unibody design.

The new Alexa Tablets launch with Android 16 and will receive Android 17 in early 2027. Amazon commits to at least four years of software updates for the new Alexa Tablets. The home screen features a persistent 'Ask Alexa' chat box in the bottom-right corner.

Alexa+ On-Screen Intelligence is an opt-in feature that allows the assistant analyze screen content to provide contextual help. Users do not need a Prime membership or Alexa+ subscription to use Alexa+ features on the new Alexa Tablets.

Panos Panay is the senior vice president of Amazon devices, Alexa, and Leo. He joined Amazon from Microsoft in 2023. Kevin Keith is Amazon's vice president of devices.

Panay stated, "Google Play was a necessity, end of story." He also said, "Start from zero, don’t use any components we’ve ever used. Just ask, what is it? What is a great piece of hardware and what is it supposed to do?"

He stated, "We built these around how real people actually live. How they watch. How they read. How a family shares a single screen." Regarding the assistant's capabilities, he said, "She'll do the homework, and if things work out, she's gonna bring up a shopping list where I can just hit buy now." Panay stated that the Alexa tablets were designed to offer a premium experience at an affordable price point and that the devices are built to be on par with 'the best tablets on the market.'

Amazon launched the Alexa Tablet Pro Pen for $89.99. The Alexa Tablet Pro Pen has 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and tilt detection. Amazon launched the Alexa Tablet Pro Keyboard for $149.99.

Amazon launched Kids editions of the Alexa Tablet 8 and Alexa Tablet 11. The Amazon Kids Tablet 8.7-inch starts at $229.99 and includes 64GB of storage. The Amazon Kids Tablet 11-inch starts at $329.99 and includes 8GB of RAM.

Amazon Kids Tablets include a kid-proof case and a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+. They also include a one-year worry-free guarantee to replace the device if it breaks. Amazon Kids Tablets come with cases featuring characters from Paw Patrol, Barbie, and SpongeBob.

Amazon Kids Tablets include a Parent Dashboard that allows remote management of screen time, usage monitoring, and Google Play Store download approvals. Amazon Kids+ includes a new AI feature called Storybuilder that generates picture books and comics.

The new Alexa Tablets will go on sale in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico on October 14, 2026. Amazon Kids Tablets will be available in Japan starting October 14, 2026. The new Alexa Tablets will launch in the U.K., Germany, France, Italy, and Spain on October 19, 2026. IDC reported that global tablet shipments fell 12.3 percent year-over-year in the second quarter of 2026 to 33.6 million units.

Amazon will provide security updates and support for existing Fire tablets for four years after the final shipment date. He stated, "We won’t leave any customer behind."

What's New

Amazon has not previously launched a tablet lineup running Android with Google Play Store access under the Fire brand; the new Alexa tablets represent a departure from the Fire OS used in earlier models. Prior to the Alexa Tablets, Amazon's Fire tablets did not have access to the Google Play Store, relying instead on the Amazon Appstore and browser-based access to Google services. Just ask, what is it? He said, "I think the team did a good job designing without making that trade. They gave you the full craftsmanship of a product, but are able to keep it at that price point."
