Researchers from the University of Maryland, College Park published a study in Frontiers in Environmental Health finding that gains in prenatal air quality from reduced human-caused pollution were offset by a doubling of wildfire-related pollution between 2003 and 2019. The analysis indicates that increasing wildfire activity is eroding public health improvements achieved through regulatory controls on industrial and vehicular emissions.

The study analyzed air pollution data from the Environmental Protection Agency and live birth records for nearly 65 million babies born in the contiguous United States between 2003 and 2019. Researchers used computer models to estimate prenatal exposure to fine particle pollution (PM2.5) from both human sources and wildfires. "We were looking at infants that were born and what their exposure was like during the prenatal period," said Michel Boudreaux, associate professor of health policy and management at the University of Maryland, College Park and the senior author of the study.

Average daily prenatal exposure to air pollution from human sources decreased by 37 percent between 2003 and 2019. However, prenatal exposure contributions from wildfires doubled during the same period. "Increasing wildfire activity is systematically offsetting prenatal air quality gains from reducing emissions from vehicles, refineries, factories and other human sources," Boudreaux said. In the West and Northwest regions of the United States, wildfires' contributions to air pollution more than doubled between 2003 and 2019.

Prenatal exposure to wildfire smoke increases the likelihood of preterm birth and low birth weight. Low-income, rural, and Indigenous populations bore a disproportionate burden of wildfire-related poor air quality. The study did not integrate data on preterm birth, birth weight, or other health outcomes, nor did it account for factors such as time spent outdoors, mask usage, or home air-filtration systems.

The findings suggest that traditional regulatory frameworks may be insufficient to address the evolving nature of air pollution sources. As wildfire activity increases, public health strategies must adapt to manage exposure to smoke, which differs fundamentally from ambient pollution generated by fixed industrial sources. This transition requires new approaches to protection and mitigation for vulnerable populations.
