RUSHVILLE, NEB. — HBO will premiere the James Gunn-produced DC series Lanterns on August 16, 2026. The eight-episode drama debuts at 9 PM ET on HBO and HBO Max.

Lanterns is part of James Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe. The series introduces a mystery set in rural Nebraska that connects two Green Lanterns across different eras. Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan, the first Green Lantern recruited from Earth. Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart, an ex-Marine who becomes the only Black member of the Lantern Corps depicted in the series.

The investigation storyline unfolds in 2016. Hal Jordan travels to the rural American town of Rushville, Neb. In response to a cryptic message. He arrives at a murder scene on a football field.

John Stewart follows Hal Jordan to Rushville by plane. The narrative also includes a flashback to 1996, which HBO released online in the first five minutes of the series. In that sequence, young John Stewart, played by Cairo Cash Lee, looks up at Hal Jordan.

In the series premiere, Hal Jordan states on television that his military-pilot father died in a plane crash when he was eight years old. Young John Stewart watches this interview. Later, John Stewart's father places an apple on John's head, aims a gun at him, and asks if he is afraid.

John Stewart responds to his father that he is not afraid. This exchange establishes the tagline of the HBO drama: "Are you afraid?"

Chris Mundy serves as the showrunner for Lanterns. The series was created by Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. James Gunn and Peter Safran are executive producers.

The cast includes Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, and Jason Ritter as William Macon's son. Poorna Jagannathan plays Zoe Macon, while Nathan Fillion appears as Guy Gardner. Ulrich Thomsen plays Sinestro, and Laura Linney also appears in the series.

William Macon controls a vast cattle ranch in the story. Hal Jordan's ring gives him the power of flight as he investigates the crime. The series structure allows for future developments beyond the initial mystery.

Lindelof stated that the writers' room for Lanterns season 2 has seemingly already started under Chris Mundy. The narrative confirms a mystery set in 2026, a decade after the main 2016 timeline. Aaron Pierre's John Stewart is confirmed to appear in David Corenswet's upcoming sequel, 2027's Man of Tomorrow.

Additional filming locations include Red Cloud, Nebraska, chosen for its historical ties to author Willa Cather. Production began in September 2023 and concluded in May 2024. The series was shot on location in central Nebraska, with local residents serving as extras during key scenes. HBO released a still image of Chandler in costume standing beside a football field under a red sky, which became widely shared online.

The series draws on elements from the Green Lantern comics but reinterprets the mythos through a grounded, procedural lens. The central murder involves a high school football coach found dead with a power ring at the scene, prompting Jordan's involvement. The ring does not activate for anyone who attempts to claim it, deepening the mystery.

Music for the series is composed by Dave Porter, known for his work on Breaking Bad and Preacher. The score blends orchestral themes with ambient soundscapes to reflect the isolation of the Nebraska setting.

Marketing for Lanterns began in late 2025 with teaser trailers emphasizing the show’s atmospheric tension. HBO launched an interactive website allowing users to explore the fictional town of Rushville and view police reports related to the case.

The series will be available for streaming the day after each episode airs. Subsequent episodes will be released weekly. No decision has been made on a potential third season, though story arcs were developed with long-term continuity in mind.

Why It Matters

Lanterns represents a significant expansion of the DC Universe under new creative leadership. By anchoring the story in a specific rural location and focusing on a murder investigation, the series diverges from traditional superhero formats. The inclusion of John Stewart as a central character alongside Hal Jordan broadens the representation within the Lantern Corps.

The confirmation of a second season before the premiere indicates confidence in the franchise's long-term potential. The connection to the 2027 film Man of Tomorrow further integrates the television series into the broader cinematic plan.
