SIERRA NEVADA — The Tulare County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office ruled the death of climber Jacob Daniel Whisenant an accident caused by blunt force trauma sustained in a fall. Whisenant died on August 3, 2026, in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks wilderness area.

Whisenant was a resident of Mammoth Lakes, California. He was originally from Scottsdale, Arizona. Whisenant graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Toxicology results are still pending.

Friends and climbing partners remembered Whisenant for his dedication to the sport. "I had the privilege of climbing with Jake these past few months and these are memories I will cherish for the rest of my life," Noah Fox said. Moore posted a message on social media honoring her friend.

"Our family is absolutely devastated by this news but find solace in the fact that Jake died doing what he loves in the beautiful Sierra Nevada," Moore said. She added, "I will look for you in every life, my brother. Now go rest high up on that mountain." Loved ones established a GoFundMe to create memorials for Whisenant.
