POMEZIA — Rome's Carabinieri police arrested Valter Lavitola for allegedly ordering a bomb attack against journalist Sigfrido Ranucci. The arrest connects a businessman and former journalist to an explosion that occurred outside Ranucci's house in Pomezia in October 2024.

Police allege Lavitola instructed Tavares Gomes Clesio to recruit four men to place the bomb. Authorities stated in the arrest warrant that Lavitola believed the bombing would raise Ranucci's profile ahead of a possible career in politics. Detectives believe Sigfrido Ranucci was unaware of Lavitola's plans.

The explosion destroyed two cars belonging to Sigfrido Ranucci. Ranucci was not injured in the attack. Four men were arrested near Naples in June for carrying out the attack. Police are still looking for Tavares Gomes Clesio.

Police state that Lavitola and Tavares Gomes Clesio conducted an initial exploratory inspection outside Ranucci's home in September 2024. The Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office, in conjunction with the Carabinieri unit in Via In Selci, is investigating the bomb attack on Sigfrido Ranucci's home in Pomezia, with the investigation including a site inspection conducted by Lavitola on September 16, one month before the attack. The Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office issued a search warrant on 4 July, which led to the seizure of Lavitola's phone and computer under a warrant issued by the Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA).

Lavitola is a former journalist and import-export businessman who owns a restaurant in Rome. During an interrogation with prosecutors, he stated that he was 'sconcertato, non sono stato io' (stunned, I did not do it). He claimed that he had a 'fraterna amicizia' (fraternal friendship) with the journalist, which is incompatible with any motive.

Sigfrido Ranucci is the host of the investigative television news show Report on state broadcaster Rai. He has been under police protection since 2021 due to his investigations into corruption and the mafia. Ranucci told ANSA the day after the attack that he had received an endless list of threats.

Lavitola and Silvio Berlusconi were each sentenced to three years in prison by a lower court in 2015 for bribery. Prosecutors accused Lavitola of handing cash to a lawmaker in the 2015 bribery case.

The case involves allegations that a violent act was orchestrated to manipulate the public standing of a prominent media figure.
