MILWAKEE — The Milwaukee Police Department is searching for unknown suspects following three overnight shootings on August 8–9, 2026, that left four people dead and two injured. The agency has not stated what led to the violence.

A shooting occurred around 10:05 p.m. on August 8 in the 3400 block of West Vliet Street in Milwaukee. A shooting occurred around 1:00 a.m. on August 9 in the 2300 block of West Fond du Lac Avenue in Milwaukee. A 15-year-old sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and was taken to a local hospital for treatment following the West Fond du Lac Avenue shooting. A 34-year-old arrived at a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound following the same incident.

Two other fatal incidents occurred the previous evening. A 29-year-old sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene of the West Pierce Street shooting. A 39-year-old sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at a local hospital following the North 39th Street shooting.

The Milwaukee Police Department is conducting monthly reviews of its data to identify properties it can deem nuisance properties and begin the process, which could ultimately result in fines for the property owner. The department was established in 1855 and serves as the law enforcement agency for the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The Milwaukee Police Department was awarded a Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program grant to support the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission (MHRC) efforts to reduce gun violence. The MHRC brings together police, prosecutors, corrections, probation and parole, ATF, FBI and community service providers to review homicides and non-fatal shootings.

Milwaukee recorded 67 homicides in the first half of 2026, a decrease from the 89 homicides recorded in the first half of 2025. The city recorded 85 homicides in the first half of 2024.

Nonfatal shootings also decreased during this period. Milwaukee recorded 249 nonfatal shootings in the first half of 2026, down from 344 in the first half of 2025. The city recorded 416 nonfatal shootings in the first half of 2024. Research titled Data analytics of fatal police shootings involving individuals in mental health crisis was published in 2023 in 2023 IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology (eIT).

These four deaths and two injuries interrupt a documented downward trend in Milwaukee violence, where homicides and nonfatal shootings both decreased in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous two years. The incidents involve victims ranging from a teenager to adults, showing that the recent statistical improvements do not preclude concentrated lethal events. With no stated motive and unknown suspects, the shootings test whether the city's multi-agency review processes can address sudden spikes despite broader annual declines.
