TORRANCE, CALIFORNIA — Valar Atomics raised $1 billion in equity in its Series B funding round as the company moves to scale production of its Ward 250 reactor. The Torrance, California-based startup secured the capital following a successful zero-power fueled criticality demonstration completed on June 18, 2026.

The official record states that Valar Atomics’ Ward 250 reactor successfully completed the demonstration at the Utah San Rafael Energy Lab in Emery County, Utah. There is no record of an earlier incident involving Valar Atomics at the facility or with the Ward reactor prior to this event.

Isaiah Taylor, the 27-year-old founder and CEO of Valar Atomics, outlined the strategic shift enabled by the new capital. "So, what does the new Series B financing mean for Valar? It allows us to make the next mission critical evolution: Valar will transition from demonstrating the operability of an integrated reactor system to producing fleets of them en masse," Taylor said.

The Series B funding round was led by Sequoia. Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire will join Valar Atomics' board of directors. Other investors in the round include Apandion Capital, Atreides Management, Conviction, Dream Ventures, HOF Capital, Point72 Ventures, Riot Ventures, Snowpoint Ventures, and Valor Equity Partners.

In addition to the equity raise, Valar Atomics secured a $200 million line of credit from Erebor and other banks. Valar Atomics' valuation is $6 billion following the transaction.

Valar Atomics is developing the five-megawatt Ward 250 reactor, which uses helium as a coolant instead of water. The company intends to manufacture its own TRISO fuel for the reactors. This design choice distinguishes the Ward 250 from traditional light-water reactors.

The path to the June 2026 demonstration involved significant logistical milestones. In February 2025, Valar Atomics loaded parts for its Ward 250 reactor onto a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft at March Air Reserve Base in California. The company flew the reactor parts to Hill Air Force Base in Utah.

The February airlift was the first demonstration that a microreactor could be wholly transported by plane. This transport capability supports the company's goal of deploying fleets of reactors rather than single large installations.

Regulatory approval remains a pending hurdle for the technology. The Ward 250 reactor design has not received approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Valar Atomics filed a lawsuit against the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission regarding the regulatory process.

Despite the ongoing legal dispute, the company has achieved technical milestones recognized by federal agencies. Valar Atomics became the first venture-backed startup to split atoms using an experimental core at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

In June 2025, Valar Atomics achieved first criticality with its prototype Ward 250 reactor. The company was the second company in the Department of Energy pilot program to achieve this milestone. Also in June 2025, Valar Atomics demonstrated its Ward 250 reactor powering an Nvidia Blackwell system.

Valar Atomics announced a deal with Nvidia to develop a waterless 30MW AI factory. This partnership aligns with the company's focus on providing power for high-density computing infrastructure without water consumption.

Federal support preceded the recent funding and technical achievements. In August 2024, the Department of Energy selected Valar Atomics as one of 10 companies for a pilot program to help next-generation reactor startups achieve first criticality. In September 2024, the Department of Energy named Valar Atomics one of four companies in a pilot program to develop new supply chains for nuclear fuel.

"This has been Valar’s mission since its inception," Taylor said. The statement connects the recent financial close to the company's long-term operational goals.

The $1 billion equity raise and additional $200 million credit line represent a substantial capitalization for a nuclear startup, signaling investor confidence in advanced reactor designs despite regulatory uncertainties. The transition from single-unit demonstration to mass production, as stated by CEO Isaiah Taylor, marks a shift in the industry toward scalable manufacturing models similar to those used in aerospace or automotive sectors.

The lack of NRC approval for the Ward 250 design shows the ongoing friction between innovative reactor concepts and existing regulatory frameworks. The lawsuit filed by Valar Atomics against the commission reflects the legal challenges facing companies seeking to deploy non-traditional nuclear technologies. The Department of Energy's inclusion of Valar in multiple pilot programs since 2024 indicates federal interest in accelerating the development of these supply chains and testing protocols outside national laboratories.
