LA VERNIA — A 16-year-old La Vernia High School student died in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 87 in La Vernia, Texas, just before 4 a.m. on August 2, 2026. The victim was the only occupant in her 2015 Lexus RX3 when it left the roadway, struck a sign, rolled over and caught fire.

The crash occurred in the 12000 block of U.S. Highway 87, near East Chihuahua Street in La Vernia, Texas. The victim was traveling northbound on the highway when she left the roadway and entered a grassy area.

U.S. Highway 87 is designed exclusively for high-speed vehicular traffic, with all traffic flow and ingress and egress regulated. The vehicle struck a brick-and-mortar City of La Vernia welcome sign during the incident.
