WYOMING — William Standish, a 28-year-old Australian hiker, was found dead in Wyoming. Rescuers discovered Standish's body on Wednesday morning in the Wigwams, a series of rocky peaks on the west slope of the Teton mountain range.

Investigators stated that a fatal fall was the likely cause of death. Evidence suggests Standish may have fallen from a steep ridgeline separating Grand Teton and the Jedediah Smith Wilderness. A helicopter team discovered Standish after spotting an orange backpack and seeing his remains below the ridge.

Standish's body was transported to the Teton County Coroner’s Office after recovery. The Teton County Search and Rescue team issued a statement saying it "sends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased." The team also expressed gratitude to federal agencies that assisted in the search for Standish.

Standish was attempting a thru-hike of the Continental Divide Trail between Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks when he disappeared. On 19 July, Standish provided an update from a location near Old Faithful and described his planned route through the Tetons, Gros Ventre Wilderness, the Wind River Range, and the Divide Basin. Four days after 19 July, Standish's family received a Garmin check-in without coordinates or a message.

Standish's family stopped receiving updates from him via a Garmin GPS device and Facebook Messenger on 23 July. Standish last contacted his family on 23 July. Standish's family received a Facebook Messenger video they believe placed him in the Wigwams. Park officials located Standish outside the national park area and transferred the case to Teton County Search and Rescue after the family contacted them on Monday.

Standish had been following a popular thru-hike starting in Canada, the northernmost point of the 3,100-mile Continental Divide Trail, which passes through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. The Continental Divide Trail has a length measured by the Continental Divide Trail Coalition of 3,028 miles (4,873 km), with an actual hiking distance ranging from 2,700 miles (4,300 km) to 3,150 miles (5,070 km) due to frequent route changes and alternate routes.
