KAZAKHSTAN — A Soyuz spacecraft carrying NASA astronaut Anil Menon and Russian cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on July 14, 2026. The spacecraft is heading to the International Space Station.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman attended the launch, marking the first time a NASA chief has visited the Baikonur Cosmodrome in eight years. Space officials from the United States and Russia were present at the event.
Menon brings extensive experience in emergency medicine and commercial spaceflight protocols to the mission. He has conducted field medical work in disaster zones, including serving as a first responder during the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the 2015 Nepal earthquake, and the 2011 Reno Air Show accident. Menon also served as a flight surgeon for SpaceX during its early human spaceflight missions, where he was instrumental in developing the company's medical protocols and research programs.
Dubrov is a Russian engineer and cosmonaut who previously flew to the ISS on Soyuz MS-19 in 2021. That mission marked his first spaceflight, and he has since accumulated over 180 days in space across two missions. Kikina previously flew to the ISS on Soyuz MS-23 in 2022, becoming the first female cosmonaut to fly on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in 12 years.
The Soyuz MS-29 mission marks the third time that a U.S. astronaut has been part of a Russian-led Soyuz crew since 2011. This follows NASA’s Scott Kelly and Russia’s Mikhail Kornienko on Soyuz MS-03 from 2015 to 2016, and NASA’s Joe Acaba and Russia’s Oleg Kononenko on Soyuz MS-11 from 2017 to 2018. It is also the second time that a U.S. astronaut has flown on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft with a Russian cosmonaut, following NASA’s Chris Cassidy and Roscosmos’ Alexander Misurkin aboard Soyuz MS-10 in 2018.
This launch reflects continued U.S.-Russia cooperation despite broader geopolitical tensions. In 1975, an American commander and a Soviet counterpart docked their spacecraft and shook hands in space during the Apollo-Soyuz mission, with the crews remaining together in orbit for more than 40 hours. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty established principles for developing space peacefully under the auspices of the United Nations for the benefit of all humankind.
Andrei Ionin, a Russian space expert, said that no single country can manage deep space exploration alone. "We need to realize that no country can manage, technologically or financially, to explore deep space on its own," Ionin said. He added that "no single country has national tasks on the moon or Mars that can justify the costs involved." Ionin stated that "the only way … is to unite the efforts of leading countries to realize common purposes" and noted that "it should be easier to reach agreement in space than on Earth."
Natan Eismont, a researcher at the Space Research Institute in Moscow, said that space science remains connected to political realities. "Some might say that space science is outside the realm of politics, but that’s not so," Eismont said. He added that "in fact, making agreements in space can improve the political climate on Earth." Recent developments include a deal between India and Russia to share rocket engine technology. Artemis is a NASA-led international program aiming to set up a base on the moon and prepare for future manned missions to Mars.

This mission demonstrates that space cooperation persists as a mechanism for international alignment, echoing the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz handshake. Experts note that no single nation can financially or technically justify lunar or Mars exploration alone, necessitating united efforts under the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. Such agreements in space may subsequently improve political climates on Earth while advancing shared goals like the Artemis program.
