INDIANAPOLIS — Two Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were wounded and a suspect was killed during a shootout on July 22, 2026. The suspect, Dalys Jett, 21, opened fire on officers shortly after contact was made during a disturbance call. At least three officers returned fire, striking the suspect.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department received a call regarding a disturbance just after 10:15 p.m. on July 22, 2026. The incident occurred in the 8000 block of East 37th Street in the Homewood Park housing addition in Indianapolis.

Neighbors stated that Jett had his hands in his pockets when police arrived and did not remove them when asked. Neighbors said officers grabbed Jett’s arms, at which point a gunshot was heard. The suspect was armed with a gun when officers arrived at the scene.

Two IMPD officers were struck by gunfire. At least three officers returned fire, striking the suspect.

One officer was transported to the hospital by ambulance and the other in a police cruiser. The suspect was transported to Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. IMPD Public Information Officer Tommy Thompson said, "Two of our officers [were] struck by gunfire trying to do their job and wanting to go home to their families every night, protecting their community, the City of Indianapolis."

One of the wounded officers was released from the hospital on July 23, 2026. One wounded officer remains in the hospital in stable condition. Indianapolis Police Chief Tanya Terry said one of the wounded officers was saved by their bulletproof vest.

"This should not be okay or acceptable by our community or us," Terry said. "We cannot allow this kind of violence against our officers to become something normal."

Coroners identified the deceased as 21-year-old Dalys Scott Kohl Jett. Jett had no prior arrests or disciplinary records with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, according to IMPD's internal records accessed by local media. Jett was a 2023 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School.
