GLENDALE, ARIZ. — The Glendale Police Department released body camera video of an officer-involved shooting that occurred on May 20. The footage documents the moments leading up to an officer firing shots after a suspect held a woman hostage with a knife inside a gun store.

The incident began after a 911 caller reported that a woman in the store was in distress and requested emergency assistance. The caller stated the man accompanying the woman was acting erratically and told dispatchers he was becoming increasingly aggressive. The caller also reported that the woman had a cut on her hand.

Gun store clerks attempted to stall the transaction until officers arrived at the scene. Body camera footage shows officers entering the store and approaching the suspect. As the officers moved closer, the man grabbed the woman around the waist. He held the woman hostage with a knife while maintaining physical control over her.

An officer deployed a TASER during the confrontation, causing the man to fall to the ground. The man did not release his hold on the woman or the knife after being Tasered. An officer then fired shots, striking the suspect. The suspect survived the gunshot wounds.

The suspect faces multiple charges related to the incident. The shooting remains under investigation by authorities. The Glendale Police Department initiated both an internal review and a criminal review of the officer-involved shooting. Findings from these reviews will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for further evaluation.
