HOUSTON — A car flew off a Beltway 8 HOV overpass and landed upside down on the Southwest Freeway on a Wednesday evening. Three women were trapped inside the vehicle, but all three survived the crash.

Jack Johnson is a Good Samaritan who stopped to help at the crash scene. Johnson did not see the car fly off the overpass but saw the barrier crumble and the car in the road.

"I just seen the car just flat rooftop down, smashed in, and I saw a couple of gentlemen that was there," Johnson said. Something just told me just to get out the vehicle and just to go see what was going on and just to go help.

Strangers used sledgehammers, poles, and their bare hands to extract the women from the vehicle. Individuals at the scene performed specific tasks, including standing on top of the car and using fire extinguishers due to the smell of gas.

"Everyone had their own little task. They had one standing on top of the car and they said they smelled gas. They just pulled off fire extinguishers and everything, just to make sure," Johnson said.

"All I can just hear is the young girls in there just screaming, yelling, saying, ‘Get me out. Get me out. Help me. Help me.’ And I thought about my little girls," he said.

"That was a major relief. I’m glad I didn’t walk up to not hearing any voices at all."

First responders arrived and safely removed the three women from the vehicle. The strangers involved in the rescue did not exchange names, only handshakes, before departing.

Johnson expressed a hope to reconnect with the other rescuers and the three women. "Houston comes together. At a time of need, we come together and that made me feel wonderful that everybody would just stop their lives to deal with another person that was in danger," he said.

Metro police stated the driver was speeding before losing control and striking the HOV barrier. Metro Police stated the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
