BROOKLYN — A 7-month-old baby was killed by a stray bullet when two men on a moped opened fire on a Brooklyn sidewalk on April 1, 2026. The shooting occurred around 1:20 p.m. when the passenger on the moped fired at least two shots at a group of people gathered on the street.

Police said the shooting was believed to be gang-related and the child was an unintended victim. The family was walking near the intersection of Humboldt and Moore streets in Brooklyn when the shots were fired. After hearing the shots, the child's mother rushed her daughter into a nearby bodega and then saw the stroller covered in blood.

The baby was taken by ambulance to Woodhull Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:46 p.m. No other injuries were reported in the shooting.

After the shooting, the moped sped off and crashed into an oncoming car two blocks away. The crash ejected both men from the moped with enough force that the passenger lost both his shoes. One of the men on the moped was injured in the crash, taken to a hospital, and held in police custody in connection with an unrelated investigation.

Police launched a manhunt for the two suspects who fled after the shooting. Police investigators used neighborhood security cameras to track the moped's route in the minutes after the shooting. Surveillance images show the shooter firing from the back of the moped while the driver sped away. The moped driver was described as a man with long hair wearing a light-colored hooded sweatshirt and the shooter wore a dark-colored hoodie.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said, "There are no words that can mend the heartbreak this family is feeling right now." He added, "A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant." Mamdani said the killing is a reminder that much work still needs to be done to reduce gun violence.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, "This is a terrible day in our city, a tragedy that truly shocks the conscience." She continued, "As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain that this family is feeling or the grief that they now carry with them. It is unspeakable." Ms. Jones, a witness, said, "I heard someone say, 'My baby, my baby.' She was trying to tell her baby to wake up, telling the baby to wake up." Jones added, "Once I heard the beep, I knew it was flatlining and the baby was gone."

Through Sunday, the NYPD had recorded 52 killings so far in 2026, down 29% from the same period last year. The city was on track to finish the first quarter with killings and shootings near their lowest in decades.
