TIPTONVILLE — The Lake County grand jury returned 50 indictments in 19 cases involving violent acts at Northwest Correctional Complex. District Attorney Danny H. Goodman Jr. announced the indictments on Tuesday, detailing a sweeping set of charges tied to inmate deaths, staff misconduct, and other serious offenses inside the prison.

The indictments encompass five inmate murders, assaults against both staff and inmates, and additional violent incidents. Among the charges, eight people were indicted for the first-degree murder of an inmate on August 12, 2025, and six others were indicted for the first-degree murder of another inmate on October 8, 2025. The murder charges relate to inmates killed in five separate incidents in 2025 and 2026.

Two former employees of the correctional complex were indicted for aggravated assault, assault, official misconduct, official oppression, and violating the oath of office. Other indictments included charges of especially aggravated rape, especially aggravated kidnapping, attempted first-degree murder, assaults on correctional staff, and possession of controlled substances. Some of those indicted include former staff members and inmates.

Goodman is withholding the names of those indicted until all individuals have been arrested or served notice. He said the indictments reflect a broader trend of rising violence within Tennessee’s prison system. "Violence within the Department of Corrections has increased significantly in the past few years and we will continue to prosecute these cases to make the penal system as safe as possible for not only the correctional officers but the inmates who are serving a sentence," he said.

Northwest Correctional Complex, which can house 1,776 male inmates—including juveniles convicted as adults—has faced staffing challenges that may affect security. A 2023 audit of Tennessee prisons found the department had a 61% vacancy rate for correctional officers at the Lake County prison during that fiscal year. The Tennessee Department of Correction did not respond to requests for information about staff and inmates at the prison and the indictments.
