SAN ANTONIO — Jolie Pesina crashed her vehicle into Leon Creek on November 17, 2025, after her iPhone’s Crash Detection system automatically contacted 911 with precise GPS coordinates. The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) failed to locate her despite the detailed location data, and her remains were discovered by family members 37 hours later.

Pesina, 21, was driving to work shortly before 6 a.m. when she crashed through a guardrail along Southwest Loop 410 before Palo Alto Road and plunged into Leon Creek. Her iPhone immediately triggered an emergency call that delivered her exact latitude and longitude, along with a two-meter search radius, to a San Antonio 911 call taker. The automated message stated, "The owner of this iPhone was in a severe car crash and is not responding to the phone." However, the 911 recording shows the call taker repeatedly talked over portions of the message.

A dispatcher relayed only a nearby street address—the 12401 block of Southwest Loop 410 eastbound lanes—to responding officers instead of the precise coordinates. Officers searched for less than 15 minutes, driving back and forth in front of an apartment complex blocks from the actual crash site, according to surveillance footage. An officer requested assistance from SAPD’s helicopter unit to search the wooded area off the roadway, but the request was denied because the helicopter was not flying at the time. The search ended after officers were told traffic cameras showed no evidence of a crash.

Two of Pesina’s relatives received the same Apple crash alert with coordinates. On November 18, 2025, her boyfriend’s father called 911 at approximately 6:53 p.m. after the family used those coordinates to locate her vehicle in a ditch. Pesina’s mother, Mercy Villarreal, said, "I believe if they would have done their job they would have found her, but they didn’t." She added, "I just feel like they failed her. And she was there by herself from Monday to Tuesday. And it really hurts." Villarreal also stated, "They could’ve done more. They could have sent more policemen. They could have sent a helicopter. They could’ve sent dogs."

An autopsy released by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Pesina died from blunt force injuries sustained in the crash. The report noted her head was above the water level when she was removed from the vehicle, and there was no evidence of drowning. It did not indicate how long she may have survived after the crash. Villarreal lamented, "Even though she was gone, at least I could have held her hand," and added, "At least I could have kissed her. And I couldn’t even do that. And it just hurts. It just hurts."

Cody Breunig, a former police officer and digital forensics expert, described Apple’s Crash Detection system as "baked into the hardware" and "based on thousands of hours of crash data that Apple has collected and trained their device on." He called it "quite frankly, a lifesaving tool" and noted, "Most operators know to listen." Breunig said, "I think it’s an opportunity for any individual who is in charge to look at and analyze what went wrong."

The San Antonio Police Department initially attempted to withhold 911 recordings, a crash report, and an incident detail report, with city officials arguing the records related to a closed criminal case and contained information protected under the Texas Transportation Code. The Texas Attorney General’s Office ordered their release in March 2026, determining the information concerned a deceased person. SAPD released the records in mid-May 2026 but declined interview requests and did not answer questions about potential discipline for personnel or procedural changes after the incident.
