SAN ANTONIO — James Brennand appeared in court for a continuance hearing on Monday, May 11, 2026. The hearing took place in Bexar County’s 437th Criminal District Court as part of proceedings in his criminal case stemming from a 2022 shooting incident.

Brennand, 31, has been charged with aggravated assault by a public servant, a first-degree felony. The charge arises from an October 2022 encounter in which police records indicate he fired multiple shots at a BMW driven by Erik Cantu, who was 17 years old at the time. Body camera footage shows Brennand opening the door of Cantu’s vehicle and shooting at him as Cantu attempted to drive away. Brennand was fired from the San Antonio Police Department three days after the shooting.

Jury selection for Brennand's trial is scheduled to begin on July 20, 2026. His trial is expected to last two and a half weeks. If convicted, Brennand could face up to life in prison.

Brennand made another court appearance in late June 2026. On June 8, 2026, Judge Stephanie Boyd handed down the sentencing in Bexar County’s 187th Criminal District Court.
