HAMILTON COUNTY — Darron Lee appeared in a Hamilton County courtroom on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, and entered no plea during his arraignment on a first-degree murder charge. Lee hired attorney Neal Pinkston to lead his defense against the charge in Tennessee.

Entering no plea during an arraignment functions as a not guilty plea under Tennessee law. Lee has been jailed without bond since his arrest in February. The Hamilton County grand jury indicted Lee on a first-degree murder charge last month, but prosecutors dropped a separate tampering-with-evidence count that had accompanied his arrest.

Prosecutors allege Lee killed his girlfriend, Gabriella Perpétuo, at their Ooltewah home in February. Investigators described extensive injuries to Perpétuo's body, including blunt force trauma and multiple wounds, and her death was ruled a homicide. Investigators cited evidence that Lee asked ChatGPT for advice on handling an unresponsive person the day before Perpétuo's body was found. Lee told police that Perpétuo may have slipped in the shower.

Pinkston replaces public defender Mike Little, who represented Lee through his earlier court appearances. Pinkston previously served eight years as Hamilton County's elected district attorney before returning to private practice, prosecuting hundreds of homicide, rape, and child abuse cases. He lost his 2022 re-election bid to current District Attorney Coty Wamp. Pinkston requested a continuance until early July at a June hearing to finalize his role in the case.

"Mr. Lee's matter interested me," Pinkston said. He added, "Not everybody alleged to have committed a crime has committed a crime."

It remains undecided whether the state will pursue the death penalty in Lee's case. Perpétuo was 29 years old at the time of her death, and her family has filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit. Lee's next court date is scheduled for October 8.

Lee faced domestic violence allegations in prior relationships, including a 2023 Ohio case involving his mother and the mother of his young son. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges in that case and served probation. Lee was selected 20th overall by the New York Jets in the 2016 NFL draft, signing a rookie contract worth $10.22 million over four years. He started 36 games over three seasons with the team and later played for the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and Las Vegas Raiders. Lee was on the Chiefs roster for the team's Super Bowl LIV win in 2020 but did not play in the game.
