PORTLAND — Two Portland police officers sustained injuries early Tuesday during a physical altercation with Yimer Funez-Cruz while responding to a trespassing call in Northeast Portland's King neighborhood. The Portland Police Bureau said officers confronted Funez-Cruz, 23, shortly before 2 a.m. and asked him to leave the property.

Partial body camera footage released by the bureau appears to show officers ordering Funez-Cruz to leave the building or face arrest. When Funez-Cruz refused, officers attempted to arrest him, leading to a struggle. The footage appears to show punches exchanged between Funez-Cruz and the officers, with one officer heard yelling, "Get off my taser." The officers placed Funez-Cruz into custody and were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Portland Police Chief Bob Day issued a news release Tuesday. "I'm relieved both officers are expected to recover from their injuries," Day said.

Funez-Cruz was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on eight charges, including assaulting a public safety officer, second-degree assault, fourth-degree assault, attempted theft, trespassing and felon in possession of a weapon. Jail records indicate Funez-Cruz remains lodged and has not yet appeared in court regarding these new charges.

Court records show Funez-Cruz was convicted in December 2024 of second-degree felonious assault and unlawful use of a weapon. He received a sentence of 27 months in prison and 60 months of probation. A warrant for Funez-Cruz's arrest was issued in June for an alleged probation violation; he was scheduled to appear in court the week of July 6, 2026. Records also indicate a past conviction for interference with making a report and a 2023 DUII charge for which he entered a diversion program.
