FOXBOROUGH — A French court in Versailles rejected an appeal by Achraf Hakimi on June 19, 2026, and ordered him to stand trial on a charge of rape stemming from an alleged assault in 2023. Hakimi denies the allegations.

Hakimi and his lawyer, Fanny Colin, filed the appeal with the Versailles criminal court seeking further investigation. The court ruled there was sufficient evidence against Hakimi for him to stand trial.

Hakimi, 27, was indicted by an investigating judge in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, on March 3, 2023. A woman stated she met him over Instagram in January 2023 and called a cab to his home after communicating with him. The accuser stated Hakimi forcibly kissed and touched her without her consent.

Hakimi's then-wife, Hiba Abouk, announced via Instagram on March 27, 2023, that she and Hakimi had separated before the alleged assault. Abouk stated she has "always been and always will be on the side of victims."

On the same day his appeal was rejected, Hakimi started against Scotland in a 2026 World Cup Group C match at Boston Stadium in Foxborough. Scotland fans booed Hakimi during the match. After the match, Hakimi became the most capped African player in World Cup history.

Hakimi is the captain of the Morocco Men's National Team and plays as a right back for Paris Saint-Germain. He made his senior Morocco debut on October 11, 2016, coming on as a substitute against Canada. He has made 101 appearances and scored 12 goals for the national team. He helped lead Morocco to win the 2025 African Cup of Nations, held in Morocco, and was named the 2025 AFCON Player of the Year. He also helped lead Morocco's Olympic team to a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Hakimi was born in Madrid and raised in Getafe. He signed as a youth player for Club Deportivo Colonia Ofigevi at age 8 and joined the Real Madrid academy one year later. He made his senior Real Madrid debut in a friendly against PSG at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, OH, on July 27, 2016. He made nine appearances for Real Madrid and earned a Champions League winner's medal when the club defeated Liverpool FC 3-1 in the 2017-18 Champions League Final in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Hakimi was loaned to Borussia Dortmund for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, scoring 7 goals in 54 appearances. He signed for Inter Milan after his loan, scoring 7 goals in 37 appearances. He was sold to PSG after one season at Inter Milan and signed a five-year deal with the club.
