LITTLEPORT — Hannes Marschalek, a 37-year-old US Air Force staff sergeant assigned to RAF Lakenheath in 2021, faced a US court martial in 2023 on two charges of indecent conduct. Marschalek admitted he stood naked at his door on two occasions between August and October 2022.

Cambridgeshire police received complaints in 2022 that Marschalek had indecently exposed himself to women walking past his home in Littleport, Cambridgeshire. Some complainants were between 16 and 24 years old. One alleged victim stated that Marschalek stood at his door exposing his penis while holding a mobile phone. Another alleged victim stated he posed naked at his door with his hand on the top of the door frame.

In July 2022, Marschalek texted two friends stating he had flashed women from his home. A text message from Marschalek read, "I definitely just flashed a couple ladies walking from the train. LOL." Another message stated, "I took all my clothes off when I walked in. I went to go open a window and I was standing right in front of it when they walked by."

Cambridgeshire police arrested Marschalek at his home on October 9, 2022. During the arrest, police discovered Marschalek was employed by the US military. Cambridgeshire police notified the US military of the arrest and investigation. The force received an official request from the US military to transfer the investigation on October 31, 2022, and subsequently transferred it on that same date. Cambridgeshire police consulted with victims before the transfer decision. A Cambridgeshire police spokesperson stated that no one complained about the decision to transfer the investigation at the time.

In an interview with military investigators, Marschalek stated, "I understand and believe my behaviour, specifically opening the door to be seen naked, which sexually excited me, could have been perceived by others as vulgar, obscene and repugnant." Military lawyers representing Marschalek denied he was a serial flasher. A US Air Force spokesperson stated that the military negotiated jurisdiction over the case with local police using all available facts at the time.

Marschalek and military prosecutors agreed to a plea bargain in which one charge was dismissed. The original charge had alleged masturbation, but this reference was deleted from the final formulation. Marschalek later won an appeal in a US military court, which quashed his conviction on technical grounds.
