MICHIGAN — Mallory McMorrow suspended her campaign for the U.S. Senate on Sunday, July 5, 2026. Her departure affects the Michigan Democratic Senate primary race, which includes candidates Haley Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed.

Following McMorrow's announcement, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel endorsed Haley Stevens. Nessel said, "Haley cares deeply about the needs of her constituents." The Michigan Jewish Democratic Caucus also endorsed Stevens, and the Jewish Democratic Council of America reaffirmed its commitment to her on Monday, July 6, 2026. The Jewish Democratic Council of America had previously endorsed both McMorrow and Stevens.

Rabbi Aaron Starr of Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield, Michigan, stated that for many Michigan Jews, the Democratic primary race for senator "feels like an existential moment." Starr and fellow clergy authored a letter in June urging support for candidates committed to protecting Jewish lives and supporting Israel's security. Starr described Stevens as "an ongoing friend of the Jewish community" who "personally reached out to me after October 7." He also noted he had not heard from Abdul El-Sayed.

El-Sayed's campaign launched a "Jews For Abdul" affinity group. Its mission statement says El-Sayed "correctly recognizes that the Israeli government does not speak for all Jewish people, or even for all Jewish citizens of Israel." The statement also says El-Sayed "has properly characterized Israel's US-enabled genocide in Gaza to be among the most immoral events of our time." El-Sayed has publicly expressed doubt that Israel should be a Jewish state.

AIPAC's affiliated super PAC has spent over $10 million on the Michigan Senate race, according to Federal Election Commission disclosures. Stevens accepted backing from AIPAC. AIPAC also backed Stevens in the 2022 election, when she defeated former U.S. Representative Andy Levin in a redrawn district. J Street, which had backed McMorrow, did not endorse a new candidate after her campaign suspension.

Michigan is home to an estimated 129,000 Jews. Earlier in 2026, an attack occurred at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. El-Sayed issued a statement about the attack that mentioned Israel's war in Lebanon.
