BRASILIA — Flavio Bolsonaro requested a 180-day delay on proposed U.S. tariffs on Brazilian goods, seeking the delay until after the October 2026 Brazilian election. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva subsequently accused him of treason regarding this action.

The Trump administration proposed 25 percent tariffs on Brazilian goods in June 2026. Prior to this announcement, Flavio Bolsonaro met with senior U.S. officials in Washington. The Trump administration cited alleged trade violations, including illegal deforestation and unfair electronic payment practices, as justification for the proposed tariffs.

President Lula da Silva stated in a social media post that the Bolsonaro family motivated the tariff situation's origin. He characterized Flavio Bolsonaro's request to delay tariffs as an act of treason against Brazil.

Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, wrote a submission to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, arguing that new U.S. tariffs on Brazilian products would give the current Brazilian government a political advantage. He is a candidate in the 2026 Brazilian presidential election.

In his submission, Flavio Bolsonaro reiterated that Brazil's general elections are scheduled for October 2026. He further stated that the political landscape determining the viability of any negotiated resolution would be redefined within approximately 90 days. Washington has until July 15, 2026, to decide on the imposition of these tariffs. If approved, certain items such as beef, coffee, rare earth minerals, and aircraft parts would be exempt from the tariffs.

In response to a letter from Flavio Bolsonaro, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that U.S. officials maintained substantial differences with Brazil concerning the issues justifying the proposed tariffs. A Quaest poll indicated that 47 percent of Brazilians agreed with President Lula's assertion that Flavio Bolsonaro encouraged the U.S. to impose tariffs. Conversely, 35 percent of Brazilians agreed with Flavio Bolsonaro's claim that he sought to prevent the tariffs.
