WASHINGTON, D.C. — Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought testified on June 30, 2026, before the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Financial Services, stating there were no plans to publish a final report on the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The temporary initiative was scheduled to conclude on July 4, 2026.
Vought said the OMB would not be producing a formal closing document for the DOGE. "We have no plans to do kind of a closing DOGE report," Vought said. He added that the OMB was available to discuss the department's operations, saying, "We're always happy to give you our assessment of that work." He also stated, "I think it made some really important strides."
President Donald Trump established the DOGE as a temporary initiative with an executive order in January 2025. The department, under the leadership of Elon Musk, aimed to achieve $2 trillion in federal spending reductions. It reported approximately $215 billion in savings.
The DOGE's activities contributed to the departure of more than 260,000 federal employees through various programs, including layoffs, buyouts, and early retirements. In June 2026, the Department of Government Efficiency's website became inactive. The president's proposed budget for fiscal year 2027 does not include funding for the Department of Government Efficiency.
Federal agencies acknowledged that some workforce reductions were excessive and began efforts to restore staffing levels in critical areas. Representative Glenn Ivey of Maryland cited instances where agencies reversed staffing cuts after determining that essential expertise had been lost. "I think part of the concern with respect to DOGE, and I think most of my colleagues would agree, cutting employees that aren't needed is fine, but it's clear that what DOGE did was they advocated cutting a lot of people, a lot of federal government employees who were doing great work," Ivey said. "They didn't know what they were talking about when they advocated for those cuts, then they quickly realized that they had to bring people back," he added.
Why It Matters
The Department of Government Efficiency, a temporary initiative aiming to reduce federal spending, is concluding without a final public report on its activities or outcomes. This development occurs as the initiative, which operated for over a year, implemented large workforce reductions across federal agencies, leading to both reported savings and criticisms regarding staffing decisions. The absence of a culminating report comes as some agencies are working to restore staffing levels.
