NEW YORK — Alon Ohel, a former hostage, performed on July 4, 2026, at a U.S. Independence Day event aboard the USS Nimitz in New York Harbor. He accompanied musician John Ondrasik, also known as Five for Fighting, during the performance.

Ohel and Ondrasik played the song "Superman" for an audience that included senior military personnel and government officials. The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations also attended the event. Ondrasik had previously recorded a new version of "Superman" to honor hostages taken by Hamas. The original song was released 25 years prior to 2026 and served as a tribute to victims of the September 11 attacks.

Upon his arrival in New York for the event, Alon Ohel was listed in government computer systems as a hostage. His status required clarification with the Israeli consulate.

Ohel spent 737 days in captivity with Hamas after being kidnapped on October 7, 2023. He was released on October 13, 2025. During his time in captivity, he suffered severe injuries that went untreated. He spent much of his captivity in a tunnel and was chained by his leg, sustaining injuries to his eye.

Since his return, Ohel has undergone several surgeries. His family initiated a campaign to raise awareness regarding his condition, featuring the slogan "Alon You Are Not Alone" inscribed on pianos globally. In February 2026, Ohel performed "Yesh Li Sikui" by Eviatar Banai at a concert organized to raise funds for his rehabilitation. He dedicated the song to former hostage Eli Sharabi, who attended the concert. Ohel and Sharabi developed a bond during their time as hostages in Gaza.
