COLUMBUS — The Columbus Division of Police exchanged gunfire with a man in a homeless encampment on Saturday following reports of an assault and a firearm. Officers are searching for the suspect, identified as 41-year-old Michael Magyer.

Authorities responded to the 3000 block of Cotton Mill Street at approximately 12:30 p.m. after two 911 calls. One caller reported a man assaulting a woman in a nearby homeless encampment, and a second caller stated the man possessed a firearm. Upon arrival, officers located a male and female, and the man informed officers he had a gun. He then allegedly pointed the weapon at the female.

An exchange of gunfire occurred between the man and officers. The man subsequently fled into a wooded area, firing additional shots as he left. No officers sustained injuries during the incident; however, the female suffered injuries from the assault. It remains unclear whether the suspect was hit by gunfire during the exchange.

Police have identified the suspect as Michael Magyer, also known as "Machete Mike." Officers have obtained an arrest warrant for Magyer, who faces charges of felonious assault. Columbus Police Sergeant Joe Albert stated that Magyer is considered armed and "extremely dangerous."

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to investigate the officer-involved shooting. A perimeter was established around the American Legion and Dollar General off South High Street, approximately half a mile from the initial scene. SWAT vehicles were present at the scene.

Magyer is described as 6 feet, 2 inches tall with a thin build, brown hair, and tattoos above the left corner of his lip, on the back of his neck, and on both biceps. He was last seen wearing no shirt and black shorts. Court records indicate Magyer has a previous assault conviction from last year, for which he received a 30-day jail sentence. He also has pending aggravated menacing and assault charges that were filed in June.
