TASMANIA — A 5-year-old, 1,000 kg (2,200 pound) elephant seal named Neil hauled himself onto land in southern Tasmania state in June 2026. Wildlife officials have issued warnings regarding public safety and the animal's well-being due to the large crowds Neil has drawn.

Neil is the sole male elephant seal to visit Tasmania in recent years, and this visit marks his twelfth time ashore. Neil has damaged traffic bollards, a public warning sign about seals, and a fence. Kris Carlyon, an official from Tasmania's Department of Natural Resources and Environment, addressed the situation at a news conference in Hobart on Thursday, July 2, 2026. Carlyon stated that Neil's fame "is a bit of a double-edged sword."

Carlyon described instances of public behavior around the animal. He said, "We have had some pretty silly behavior, instances with people carrying their small babies up close to him and simply trying to get that shot for Instagram." Carlyon added, "There is a risk here of essentially loving Neil to death." Neil has a TikTok following of 1.4 million. Dale Creamer, a resident of the town Neil is visiting, said, "He's one of our biggest exports at the moment." Creamer also stated, "Neil's world and we're just living in it."

Juvenile male elephant seals practice for dominance battles, in which adult males crash their chests together to compete for breeding opportunities. Elephant seals have breeding populations on Sub-Antarctic islands south of Tasmania. If Neil survives to adulthood, he could measure up to 5 meters (16 feet) in length and weigh triple his current weight. Approximately 90% of male elephant seals die before reaching a breeding age of around 10. A walrus named Freya was euthanized in Norway in 2023 after officials cited increased risk to human safety.
