TELOS TOWNSHIP — Elvia and Todd Malcolm used their truck to intervene when a black bear charged a moose calf in Telos Township, Maine. The couple had observed a female moose prior to the incident.

About an hour from their home in Lincoln, the Malcolms saw the female moose near a wooded area. The moose turned onto a side road. Todd Malcolm told Elvia Malcolm, "Grab your phone because you're going to get a chance to get a picture of a moose." They parked their truck to watch the animal. The female moose appeared agitated and was grunting.

A moose calf and a large black bear then charged from the trees toward the couple. Todd Malcolm drove his truck between the bear and the moose calf. "I was not trying to hurt the bear, just trying to put the truck between the bear and the calf," he said. The bear jumped to the side and ran into the woods.

Elvia Malcolm said her "heart was racing because she did not want to witness the bear catching the calf." She later saw the mother moose and calf together after the bear gave up the chase. Elvia Malcolm took photos of the event through the front windshield of their truck. She said, "I really thought I probably got like a bug on the windshield when I started to look at them." Elvia Malcolm confirmed she remained inside the truck during the encounter. After the incident, the couple continued to their fishing spot and caught brook trout.
