PLANO, TEXAS — Athletics prospect Ryan Lasko underwent spinal decompression and stabilization surgery on Tuesday night, June 30, 2026, for a fractured C6–C7 vertebra. Lasko is in stable condition following the procedure, which Dr. Jonathan Poggi performed at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano.

Lasko sustained the injury during a collision with his minor league teammate Devin Taylor in a Double-A game in Frisco, Texas. The two players, outfielders for the Double-A Midland RockHounds, dove into each other while attempting to catch a flyball. Lasko remained motionless on the field after the impact and was stretchered off, while Taylor escaped without major injury.

As a result of spinal swelling, Lasko currently does not have feeling in his lower half. Athletics general manager David Forst issued a statement on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, regarding Lasko's condition. "I've been in touch with Ryan's mom, Patti, to pass along the organization's support and to let her know that all of us, throughout our system, have them in our thoughts and prayers," Forst said.

"We are incredibly grateful to Noah Huff and Audy Merrick, our athletic trainers in Midland, for their on-field actions last night, as well as to the Frisco RoughRiders and the paramedics on the scene," Forst said. "We are encouraged by the reports and updates from Dr. Poggi, and we will continue to put all of the resources of our medical staff towards supporting Ryan and his recovery."

Athletics player development director Ed Sprague traveled to Frisco following the incident. Counseling will be available to players in the organization. Lasko, 24, was selected by the Athletics in the second round of the 2023 amateur draft as the No. 41 overall pick from Rutgers.

Lasko has played for the Midland RockHounds this season, batting .209 with six homers, 34 RBIs, and a .635 OPS. In 2025, he appeared in 13 games at Triple-A Las Vegas and played 21 games in the Arizona Fall League, where he batted .357 with nine stolen bases. Baseball America ranked Lasko as the Athletics' 23rd-best prospect entering the current season.
