SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants placed third baseman Matt Chapman on the 10-Day Injured List with an abdominal strain on July 1, 2026. The team called up infielder Christian Koss from Triple-A Sacramento to fill Chapman's spot on the roster.
Chapman sustained the injury during a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 30, 2026. The strain occurred in the sixth inning while he was making a barehanded play to retire Gabriel Moreno. Chapman remained in the game to bat in the seventh inning before his departure.
Chapman stated he had been experiencing abdominal discomfort since the beginning of May. "It's been hot and cold where I'm trying to figure out what's going on," he said. He added that the barehanded play during the Diamondbacks game marked the first time the discomfort caused severe pain. "I made that bare-handed play and that was the first time that one specific play made me cringe and go down a little bit, where I was actually in a lot of pain," Chapman said.
With Chapman's injury, Casey Schmitt is expected to play third base. Willy Adames, the team's shortstop, was unavailable due to back spasms at the time of Chapman's injury, though the Giants had not placed him on the injured list. Koss is expected to play shortstop while Adames is unavailable. Koss was rehabbing an injury in the Arizona Complex League before his call-up.
Following Chapman's exit from the game on June 30, second baseman Luis Arráez shifted to third base, a position he had not played since 2022. Center fielder Jonah Cox moved to second base, marking his first time playing in the infield since his college career. Chapman is also scheduled to miss three days for the birth of his son.
