SAN ANTONIO — The City of San Antonio announced that Police Chief William McManus will retire on July 10, 2026. He previously projected a retirement date of September 30, 2026.

McManus stated that he accepted an employment opportunity in San Antonio. Prior to this updated retirement date, he had served as police chief for almost 20 years, beginning in 2006. He briefly stepped away from his role as police chief in 2015.

San Antonio City Manager Erik Walsh will appoint an acting police chief before McManus's departure. Walsh is expected to choose a finalist for the police chief position by September 2026. This finalist will then be presented to the city council and mayor for discussion.

Chief McManus's retirement marks the end of nearly two decades of service as the head of the San Antonio Police Department. The upcoming selection process for his replacement by City Manager Erik Walsh will involve an interim appointment and subsequent presentation to city officials. This process will determine the next leader for the police force.
