CHICAGO — Bowen Byram agreed to a six-year, $75 million contract extension with the Chicago Blackhawks, announced on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. The deal runs through the 2032-33 NHL season with an average annual value of $12.5 million. The salary cap hit will take effect in the 2027-28 season.

The Blackhawks acquired the 25-year-old defenseman from the Buffalo Sabres in a trade on June 23, 2026. Chicago sent the No. 4 and No. 45 selections in the 2026 NHL Draft and defenseman Louis Crevier to Buffalo, receiving Byram and forward Jordan Greenway.

"We're going to provide the opportunity to become one of the top defensemen around the league and we feel 100% wholeheartedly that he can be that guy and he will be that guy," Chicago Blackhawks General Manager Kyle Davidson said. "So, when you take it like that, a top-pair defenseman and we feel a potential No. 1 defenseman, there aren't many pieces around the league that are more valuable than that."

Byram was traded from the Colorado Avalanche to the Buffalo Sabres in March 2024 in exchange for Casey Mittelstadt. He recorded 23 goals and 40 assists in 146 games with Colorado and helped the team win the Stanley Cup in 2022. The Avalanche selected Byram with the No. 4 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.

In the 2025-26 NHL season, Byram appeared in all 82 games for the Buffalo Sabres, recording 11 goals and 31 assists for 42 points. The Sabres won the Atlantic Division title that season, marking their first playoff appearance since the 2010-11 season.

The Blackhawks also signed forward Cole Smith to a three-year contract with a $3 million salary-cap hit. Smith, 30, played 63 games for the Nashville Predators and Vegas Golden Knights last season, scoring eight goals and four assists. Defenseman Ian Cole, 37, signed a one-year contract with a $4 million salary-cap hit. Cole played 82 games for the Utah Mammoth last season, recording three goals and 20 assists.
