U.S. — A survey conducted by Ipsos for Redfin in May 2026 found that 74% of U.S. homeowners consider their current home a reflection of who they are, compared to 46% of renters who held the same view. The survey included 4,000 U.S. residents, consisting of 2,280 homeowners and 1,431 renters.

The findings indicate differing perceptions of home, with 35% of homeowners agreeing their current home is "just a place to live," compared to 57% of renters. Homeowners also reported a stronger sense of connection to their neighborhoods; 72% of homeowner respondents felt a sense of belonging to their neighborhood, while 54% of renters shared this sentiment. Similarly, 71% of homeowners considered a neighbor to be a friend, versus 50% of renters.

The survey also explored feelings of comfort and preference for staying at home. Both groups largely preferred being at home, with 74% of homeowners and 68% of renters agreeing they would rather be at home than anywhere else. Additionally, 61% of both homeowners and renters agreed their home is the only place they can get a good night's sleep.

Sheharyar Bokhari, a Redfin principal economist, said, "For many homeowners, a home is more than a place to sleep and store belongings—it’s a reflection of who they are." Bokhari added, "Homeownership can help people put down roots, build relationships and create a space that feels uniquely their own." He stated, "Those emotional benefits are a big reason why owning a home remains a cornerstone of the American Dream." Regarding market conditions, Bokhari said, "While affordability remains a challenge, today’s buyer’s market is giving some house hunters more negotiating power." He noted, "Buyers are increasingly able to secure concessions and include inspection contingencies, helping them make more informed decisions before taking the leap into homeownership."
